How it went

Their story

Juan works in Saudi Arabia, where he met May, who is from Jeddah. They married on a Saturday in March at the Convento de la Luz, a former monastery on a hilltop in Lucena del Puerto, among vineyards and olive groves. The ceremony was civil, at the church door, between two arches of flowers, with the guests seated in the courtyard. May got ready at the Hotel Alfonso XIII in Seville and Juan at the Convento itself. After the ceremony, dinner was in the church nave, with long tables under the chandeliers and catering by Nuestra Señora de Guía, and the party carried on in the same hall. The images mix both countries: Arabic coffee poured under the trees and traditional Saudi dress beside the Spanish guests’ suits. Before the wedding we spent ten days with them in AlUla, in Saudi Arabia, filming their elopement. One frame from that trip is in the wedding film and on this page too, on its own, among the rest.

GETTING READY

Getting ready. Where it all begins.

May got ready at the Hotel Alfonso XIII in Seville: a white satin robe, a bouquet of anemones and someone close beside her. Juan got dressed at the Convento de la Luz, where he would wait for the ceremony.

Where it all starts.

CEREMONY

The ceremony. The moment that never repeats.

The ceremony was civil, at the church door of the Convento de la Luz, between two arches of cream and peach roses. Earlier, Arabic coffee had been served under the trees. Juan waited at the door, smiling; the guests sat on either side of a carpeted aisle, some in traditional Saudi dress, and when it was over the couple walked back down the aisle among them.

Absolute respect.

JUST THE TWO

Just the two of them. After the “I do”.

A few minutes alone in the white corridor of the cloister: May’s dress spinning and Juan behind her, with no direction other than the light.

Only the two of you.

DRINKS & DINNER

The celebration at Convento de la Luz.

Dinner was in the church nave: long tables with candles under the chandeliers, catering by Nuestra Señora de Guía and a dance for the couple down the central aisle, with the guests clapping.

An unforgettable celebration.

PARTY

The party. When it all lets go.

The party carried on in the same nave, by night: spotlights, dancing, masks and shemagh scarves among the guests.

The camera dances with you.

/01/

A monastery with a history

According to its own website, its origins go back to the fifteenth century, when it was built as a monastery of the Order of Saint Jerome, and it has been a listed monument since 1985. Today it is an events estate on a hilltop, among vineyards and olive groves.

/02/

A civil or a religious ceremony, on site

The estate hosts religious and civil ceremonies, according to its website. Juan and May’s was civil, at the church door: a carpeted aisle, chairs for the guests in the courtyard and an arch of flowers on each side.

/03/

The church nave, for dinner and dancing

It is a covered space of more than five hundred square metres, by our own measurement from a plan: long tables and a dance floor both fit. It is where Juan and May had dinner and danced, under its chandeliers.

/04/

A white cloister for the time alone

The arcaded corridor of the cloister is white and bright, and it is where May spun in her dress. It is also a covered gallery of about five hundred and seventy square metres: a lovely plan B if it rains.

/05/

An hour and a quarter from Seville airport

From Seville airport it is 87 kilometres, about 75 minutes by car; from Faro airport, 133, about 96. For guests from abroad, the easy way is to land in Seville.

Questions

What people ask us about this wedding

What was Juan and May’s wedding at the Convento de la Luz like?

A civil ceremony on 2 March 2024 at the church door of the convent, between arches of flowers; dinner in the nave, with catering by Nuestra Señora de Guía, and the party in the same hall. May got ready at the Hotel Alfonso XIII in Seville and Juan at the Convento.

Can you have a civil wedding at the church door of the Convento de la Luz?

Yes: that is how Juan and May’s went. They set up a carpeted aisle, two arches of flowers and chairs for the guests in the courtyard, and the film caught the whole ceremony. The estate hosts civil and religious ceremonies, according to its website; it is worth confirming the conditions for your date with it.

How do you film a wedding with guests from two cultures?

Like any other: two videographers, no posing and the sound of the ceremony. In this wedding you can see Arabic coffee served under the trees, traditional Saudi dress and the Spanish guests’ suits side by side, and we tell it as it was, without explaining it.

Do you film outside Spain?

Yes. We spent ten days with Juan and May in AlUla, in Saudi Arabia, filming their elopement, before the wedding; one frame from that trip is in this film. Anything outside Andalusia is quoted separately, wedding by wedding.

Who worked on this wedding?

The Convento de la Luz provided the venue; Nuestra Señora de Guía, the catering; Cupido debe morir, the photographs; the Hotel Alfonso XIII hosted May’s getting ready; and the video is ours. The images on this page are frames from our video, not Cupido’s photographs.
