How it went
Their story
Lucía and Juan were introduced to us by Father Antonio, parish priest of Carrión, who months later would officiate their wedding at the Ermita de la Virgen de Valme. From the very first call we talked about everything except the budget, and it carried on like that: with the closeness of people who already know each other, which is how we like to arrive at a wedding day. The week before wasn’t a calm one: a misunderstanding nearly cost them the ceremony at the hermitage they had dreamed of, two jugs went missing and Juan’s ring turned out to be too small. None of that shows in the images. What does show is what they told us afterwards: the night before at Lucía’s parents’ house, with her sister reading aloud a letter Juan had written to the whole family; and, once at the hermitage, Juan’s face as he watched her walk in, as if, with a hundred and fifty people around them, it were only the two of them.
GETTING READY
Getting ready. Where it all begins.
The morning began at home, with the family close by and little Lola getting dressed with Lucía, with that look of not quite understanding what was going on but sensing it was a big day. After a week of scares, there were no nerves left here, only excitement. We filmed without directing anything: Lucía and Juan had asked us to let things flow, not to pose, and getting ready is the best place to do just that.

CEREMONY
The ceremony at the Ermita de la Virgen de Valme.
The ceremony was at the Ermita de la Virgen de Valme, in the Bellavista neighbourhood of Dos Hermanas, officiated by Father Antonio, parish priest of Carrión, who was the one who told them about us. Lola was in charge of the rings and decided not to; the church forgave her with a laugh. Juan told us that, with the church full and everyone talking to him, he watched Lucía walk in as if they were the only two there. That look is in the film.

JUST THE TWO
Just the two of them. After the “I do”.
After the “I do” we stole a few minutes with the newlyweds, before they reached the hacienda. No directions: a walk, talking quietly, breathing. Juan, who swears he can’t pose, found out he didn’t need to. They’re the calmest images of the day and some of our favourites.

DRINKS & DINNER
The celebration at Hacienda La Pintada.
The celebration was at the Hacienda La Pintada in Utrera, half an hour from Seville. The Las Torres catering was the surprise the guests still talk about, and La Tarara at the drinks reception made it clear how the afternoon was going to go. In the days that followed, the phrase Lucía and Juan heard most was “the best wedding of my life”; one friend even asked whether the camera crew were family.

Why get married in Seville
Lucía and Juan got married between Dos Hermanas and Utrera, twenty minutes from Seville. These are the reasons we see, wedding after wedding, to do it here.

Sunshine, almost guaranteed
Seville gets around three thousand hours of sun a year, among the most in Europe. In September, when Lucía and Juan got married, the afternoon is around thirty degrees and the seven o’clock light is the best of the year for filming.

Room for everyone
The Hacienda La Pintada in Utrera takes banquets of between a hundred and fifty and seven hundred guests. Lucía and Juan’s had a hundred and fifty, and there was room to spare in the courtyards for the drinks reception and the open bar.

The airport, half an hour away
Seville airport is about thirty-five minutes from the hacienda and about twenty-five from Dos Hermanas: guests from out of town arrive and leave without changing cars or plans.

It smells of orange blossom
In March and April Seville smells of orange blossom; on summer nights, of jasmine in the courtyards. At a September wedding, of the hacienda’s courtyards freshly watered before the drinks.

Proper food
Ham, salmorejo, fried fish, rice from the countryside. At this wedding, the Las Torres catering was one of the things guests talked about most afterwards. Here the food isn’t a formality of the banquet: it’s part of the party.

Seville, a step away
The city deserves a day before or after: the Giralda, the Real Alcázar, the Plaza de España, Triana at sunset. For guests coming from far away, the wedding is also the excuse to get to know it.

Weddings here are lived
Getting married in Seville means getting married in front of a crowd that gives it everything: the family sings, the friends dance and the feria never ends. Lucía and Juan summed it up with the phrase they heard most in the days after: “the best wedding of my life”.

Without directing. Lucía and Juan asked us to let it flow, not to pose: a long call before the wedding where we talked about everything, and on the day, close by but never in the way — a “relax and smile” during the ceremony, not much more. They summed it up like this: as if we’d known each other before.
